Birmingham City University have signed an agreement with Navitas to form a new International College on it's site at Bournville. This will mean that the courses will have to move to new sites by 2013. Staff have been 'briefed' to accept this decision, otherwise the University will close the courses altogether resulting in significant job losses. The University went through a cost-cutting exercise two years ago that resulted in job losses in Building Services and the closure of the student canteen at Bournville.

Hello ESN,

I am known as Mo, am part of the student represetative body at the University of Marburg (Germany) and initiator of the independent communication platform International Student Movement (ISM): http://ism-global.net/ism_en

I stumbled upon your website and thought that it might be a good idea to connect ESN and ISM somehow.

The ISM is a platform used and shaped by groups/activists around the world struggling against the increasing privatization of education and for free emancipatory education for all to exchange information, network and make coordinations together.

Although ESN is more dominated by educators, I do feel that ISM and ESN can very well complement each other. After all I feel we have similar aims, if not the same.

Please let me know what you think.

in solidarity,
Mo.

The National Union of Teachers is calling for urgent action in support of Dr Miguel Beltran, the academic being tried for ‘rebellion’ by the Colombian government.

After 22 months in detention without ever having been convicted of any offence, Dr Beltran is due to stand trial again. His trial for ‘rebellion’ has been delayed several times following a series of irregularities including allegations that evidence was manipulated.

We are writing to President Santos calling for Dr Beltran’s release.
